Ruth Elizabeth Simmons, 88, of Clay, quietly went home to be with the Lord surrounded by her family on Monday, February 1, 2010, at CAMC, after a short illness. Born October 11, 1921, in Lake City, Tennessee, she was the wife of the late Sidney H. Simmons and the daughter of the late Timothy and Annie Hendren of Curtain, WV. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Thurman and William (Sam), and sister, Lillie Hendren.

Ruth was a loving mother and homemaker as well as an active participant in her community for many years. She became the director the Christian Service Center following years as a volunteer. In 2003 she founded and directed the Heart to Heart Service Center until retiring in 2009. These non-profit agencies are based in Clay and dedicated to assisting the community with medical necessities and emergency expenses. She earned the coveted Jefferson Award for her selfless actions in the field of volunteering.

Through her 45 years in Clay County she was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, Lions Club, and Widows Circle. She was nominated and selected Belle of the 2006 Golden Delicious Apple Festival. She was an avid bingo player for many years. Her most joyous hours were spent visiting with her family and friends.

Surviving her are daughters and sons-in-laws, Linda and Earl Given of Strange Creek, WV, Sharon and Peter Turcic, Donna and Mitchell (Mick) Samples, and Rosalea Jackson, all of Charleston, WV; grandsons and daughter-in-law William (Billy) and Kelly Morehead of Looneyville WV, Sidney Jackson of Charleston WV, Matthew Jackson of Bremerton WA; granddaughter Kellie Morehead of Pinch, WV; five great-grandsons and two great-granddaughters.

Ruth's family will receive friends at Wilson-Shamblin-Smith Funeral Home in Clay from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 3, 2010, for a celebration of Miss Ruthie's life through memories and recollections. Services will be held on Thursday, February 4, 2010, at 1:00 p.m. at Wilson-Shamblin-Smith Funeral Home with Rev. Herbert Vance officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery, Fola, WV.
