Ernest R. Burroughs, Jr., 79
Ernest R. Burroughs, Jr. passed away on September 6, 2025, at the age of 79. He was born in Dayton, Ohio, on July 25, 1946. Ernest was preceded in death by his father, Ernest Sr., his mother, Velma Delores Mann Burroughs, and his brother, Robert and his wife SanJuanita Burroughs.
He is survived by his sister, Margaret Stapleton (John), and by four beloved nieces and nephews: Elizabeth Locker (Tracey), Christina Zielinski (Stephen), Sarah Brown (Jacob), and Michael Locker (Amy).
A proud Vietnam Veteran, Ernest served three years in an Engineering Battalion and continued his military career in the U.S. Army Reserve, retiring after 25 years of service as a Master Sergeant. In civilian life, he worked for Hi Tec Metal Group in Cleveland, retiring after 29 years. Following his retirement, he returned to Clay to care for and assist his father.
Ernest gave generously to his community. He volunteered with the VA for nine years, driving veterans to and from the Beckley Veterans Hospital and coordinating volunteer efforts. He was a lifetime member of the V.F.W. and an active participant in the Clay County senior group. Known for his good cheer and community spirit, he happily shared his hilltop as the launch site for Clay’s fireworks.
Ernest will be remembered for his steady service, devotion to family, and love for his community.
A visitation will be held at Wilson Smith Funeral Home 154 Main St., Clay WV from Noon-1:00 pm Thursday, September 11 with a service at 1:00 pm. Burial with military honors to follow at Sunset Cemetery.
