John Franklin Canfield, 100, of Harrison, West Virginia, passed away peacefully at his home, Saturday, June 14, 2025.
John was born on February 27, 1925, on the Diel Farm in Harrison, WV, the second of four children to the late Ansley and Sylvia “Dutch” (Taylor) Canfield. He was preceded in death by his siblings Alma, James, and Jennings.
John lived his entire life at 438 Flat Fork Road and was a beloved staple of his community.
After completing his sophomore year at Clay County High School, John was drafted into the U.S. Army. Just two days later, he transferred to the U.S. Air Force, where he served during World War II, working on weather maps and other military duties. John was proud to be a WWII veteran.
Following his military service, John returned home and married the love of his life, the late Agusta “May” (Graham) Canfield. Together, they shared over 60 years of marriage and raised seven children:
John Franklin Canfield Jr. (Kathy), Jerrell Canfield, Sharon (Charlie) Tinney, Shiela Canfield, Jackie (Joyce) Canfield, the late Sherry (Roger Burkhamer) Henry, and Melody (Shawn) Young.
He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, and two nephews, Jerry (Shelly) Canfield and Jimmy (Crystal) Canfield.
John retired from Clay Development Corporation after 17 years of service, having worked in various positions throughout Clay County. He found joy in the simple things, especially the companionship of his beloved cat of 10 years, Lucky.
The family would like to extend special thanks to Central West Virginia Aging Service and Kanawha Hospice Care and the nurses who so compassionately cared for him.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, June 21, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Clay Wilson Smith Funeral Home in Clay, WV. Funeral services will follow, officiated by Minister Wayne Litton.
John will be laid to rest at Canfield Cemetery in Harrison, WV.
