Leonard Gale Williams, of Clay County, West Virginia, went home to be with the Lord on August 14, 2025.
Born in Clay County, he was one of twelve children of the late Ray and Lue Chessie (Ramsey) Williams. Leonard was a 1962 graduate of Clay County High School. Shortly after graduation, he received his journeyman certification in Virginia. He later returned to Clay where he dedicated 45 years of service to Elk Power Company before retiring.
Leonard was a devoted husband to his wife, Linda Rose (Love) Williams, and a loving father to his daughters, Brian and Bridget (Osborn) Lambert, Keith and Laura (Hanshaw) Scott, Charles “Chuck” and Tammy (Hanshaw) McCord, and a son, J. Michael Hanshaw. He was blessed with six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, all of whom brought great joy to his life.
Leonard is preceded in death by his brothers Clarence, Richard, Paul, Charles “Charlie”, Kenneth, Gerald, and Harold “Bud” and sisters Leah (Williams) Galyiano and Hazel (Williams) Totten and an infant baby girl. Tressie “Toots” (Williams) White of Shewsbury, WV survives.
Faith was important to Leonard and attended Fairview Baptist Church in Two Run, WV, and shared fellowship through both worship and service to others. He also enjoyed being part of Sinnet Hunting Club.
Leonard gave generously of his time to his community. He served as a Clay County High School Band Booster for many years. Served on the Clay County Apple Festival Board and was an auxiliary deputy with the Clay County Sheriff’s Department. Leonard proudly served as the Mayor of Clay County for two terms.
An outdoorsman at heart, Leonard could often be found hunting, fishing, camping, or simply enjoying nature. His love for the outdoors was matched only by his love for people. He spent his life serving others, sharing kindness, and leaving a legacy of dedication to both family and community.
Leonard will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the blessing of knowing him.
Visitation is scheduled for Monday, August 18th 6-8pm at Clay Wilson Shamblin Smith funeral home. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 11am with a burial at Sunset Cemetery, Fola, WV
